Many of my students are new to Solaris, have no previous UNIX experience and they always seem afraid of the vi editor. I understand, it’s a rather cryptic environment, especially for those admins coming from a Windows or other GUI based environment. Here’s an editor, available in Solaris 11, that I give to them as an option to using vi- it’s called the nano editor. nano is a user friendly command line editor and it’s installed in the Solaris 11 environment by default. It does not have all of the features found in vi, but it gets the job done. Try it out, just type:
$ nano
Here’s a link to the nano editor website that explains it’s features or just type:
# man nano
