{"id":188,"date":"2013-07-27T11:38:18","date_gmt":"2013-07-27T15:38:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unixed.com\/blog\/?p=188"},"modified":"2013-07-27T11:38:18","modified_gmt":"2013-07-27T15:38:18","slug":"setting-up-a-solaris-lab-virtualbox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unixed.com\/index.php\/2013\/07\/27\/setting-up-a-solaris-lab-virtualbox\/","title":{"rendered":"Setting Up a Solaris Lab &#8211; VirtualBox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Virtual Environments provide an excellent &#8220;sandbox&#8221; for you to try out and get some real hands on experience with\u00a0Oracle Solaris\u2122\u00a0(x86). \u00a0 \u00a0I&#8217;ve run Oracle Solaris (x86) in both VirtualBox\u2122 and VMware\u2122, but I prefer VirtualBox. \u00a0 After installing your Virtual Machine, you can add and clone additional Virtual Machines and start up more than one at a time to simulate a network of Solaris systems. \u00a0I tell my students to setup a local lab to practice everything they&#8217;ve learned in class.\u00a0\u00a0 For those who are using my book, setup a lab on your PC to follow the examples in my book.\u00a0 If you are\u00a0fortunate to have a SPARC server, you can download Solaris for that too.<\/p>\n<p>You may download and install Solaris 10 or 11 for free. \u00a0It&#8217;s perfectly legal, but read the Oracle agreement and terms of use.<\/p>\n<p>These instructions detail how to download and setup <a title=\"VirtualBox.org\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualbox.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">VirtualBox<\/a> on an x86\/AMD desktop or laptop. \u00a0VirtualBox <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">does not<\/span> run on the SPARC platform. \u00a0VirtualBox runs on everything that I&#8217;ve ever tried it on, so the hardware requirements are easily met.\u00a0 The only problem I&#8217;ve run into is loading VirtualBox on another Virtual machine.\u00a0 The <a title=\"VirtualBox Website\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualbox.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">VirtualBox.org <\/a>website has good documentation and enough people use this product, so that any problem you encounter, is probably addressed there.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Overview:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are two methods of installing Solaris as a Virtual Machine in VirtualBox.<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Install Solaris 10 or 11 from scratch using the Solaris media (allows customization)<br \/>\nThis method is the same as installing Solaris on a x86 server.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Install Solaris 10 or 11 using a prebuilt appliance or virtual machine (easiest)<br \/>\nThis method is easiest for first time users, but does not allow customization.<\/p>\n<p>I describe both methods in this post.<\/p>\n<p>VirtualBox is a free program and can be downloaded from <span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Times New Roman; color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/server-storage\/virtualbox\/downloads\/index.html\">http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/server-storage\/virtualbox\/downloads\/index.html<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>VirtualBox can be installed on Windows, OS X, Linux and a Solaris (x86) host. \u00a0On the above website, click on the link for your host operating system, download and install Oracle VirtualBox using all of the defaults.<\/p>\n<p>Before following the steps below, download and install VirtualBox onto a desktop or laptop.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Option 1 \u2013 Installing using the Solaris Media<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>After installing Virtual Box on your PC, download the Full DVD (ISO image) \u2013 Oracle Solaris 10 (x86) from Oracle (approx 2.1 GB download)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/server-storage\/solaris10\/downloads\/index.html\">http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/server-storage\/solaris10\/downloads\/index.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Download the Full DVD ISO Image for x86 (not SPARC).<\/p>\n<p>Download Solaris 11 from this URL: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/server-storage\/solaris11\/downloads\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/server-storage\/solaris11\/downloads\/index.html<\/a><br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll see several downloads listed, for beginners, I\u00a0recommend\u00a0the &#8220;Oracle Solaris Live Media for x86.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: You will be using the x86 version of Solaris, not the SPARC version, so make sure you download the correct installation media.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If prompted for a login and password, signup for a free Oracle account.<\/p>\n<p>1. After downloading the installation media,\u00a0Install and Start VirtualBox on your PC by clicking on the icon:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/1.png?resize=80%2C96&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"80\" height=\"96\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. Click on the New icon (Hilighted):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-300x58.png?resize=450%2C87&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"450\" height=\"87\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Welcome screen will appear.<\/p>\n<p>3. Click on <strong>Next <\/strong>and the <span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">Create New Virtual Machine<\/span> window will be displayed.\u00a0 Click on <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/3.png?ssl=1\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"3\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/3.png?resize=598%2C387&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"598\" height=\"387\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Enter a name<\/strong> for your Solaris Virtual Machine, select the OS type and version (version does not need to be exact).\u00a0 Click on <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/4.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"4\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/4.png?resize=608%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"608\" height=\"375\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. Select the amount of RAM.\u00a0 Keep in mind, Windows (the host system) will be using some of the RAM too.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Make sure you leave at least 1GB for the Windows host.\u00a0 Click on <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/5.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"5\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/5.png?resize=602%2C365&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"602\" height=\"365\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. Create a New Hard disk.\u00a0 I recommend 16GB which is the default. \u00a0Click on <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/6.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"6\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/6.png?resize=607%2C354&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"607\" height=\"354\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. The Virtual creation wizard screen is displayed, use the default (VDI) and click on <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/7.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"7\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/7.png?resize=644%2C396&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"644\" height=\"396\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0The Virtual Disk Storage details screen is displayed.\u00a0 Use the default, Dynamically Allocated.\u00a0 This will save disk space on your host system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/8.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"8\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/8.png?resize=640%2C395&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"395\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Virtual disk location and size screen will be displayed.\u00a0\u00a0 You can select where the Virtual Machine and its disks will be created.\u00a0 Choose a location that has 3-4GB of free space.<\/p>\n<p>The system will create a folder named \u201cVirtual Box VMs.\u201d\u00a0 All of your virtual machines and disks will be stored here.<\/p>\n<p>9. Click <strong>Next <\/strong>when ready to move onto the next screen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/9.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"9\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/9.png?resize=637%2C396&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"637\" height=\"396\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>10. A summary screen is displayed.\u00a0 Review it and click on <strong>Create<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/10.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"10\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/10.png?resize=645%2C394&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"645\" height=\"394\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The new machine will now be listed in your VirtualBox Manager:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/11.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"11\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/11.png?resize=681%2C652&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"681\" height=\"652\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>11. Highlight the machine and select <strong>Settings<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/12.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"12\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/12.png?resize=399%2C496&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"399\" height=\"496\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Settings screen will be displayed as follows:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/13.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"13\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/13.png?resize=655%2C493&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"655\" height=\"493\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>12. Click on <strong>Storage<\/strong>, then click on the DVD.\u00a0\u00a0 The DVD will be labeled \u201cEmpty.\u201d\u00a0 Then click on the Attributes section (see highlight) and select the location of the Solaris Full DVD ISO image that you downloaded earlier.\u00a0 Then select <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/13.1.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"13.1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/13.1.png?resize=661%2C501&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"661\" height=\"501\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The VirtualBox manager window will be displayed.\u00a0\u00a0 The Storage section (see highlight) should show the CD\/DVD using the ISO image selected in the previous step.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/14.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"14\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/14.png?resize=683%2C643&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"683\" height=\"643\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>13.\u00a0Click on <strong>START <\/strong>and the installation will begin.\u00a0 The following window will begin the Solaris Installation program:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/15.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"15\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/15.png?resize=733%2C469&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"733\" height=\"469\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When the installation is complete, the Virtual Machine will still have the DVD mounted to the ISO image and will boot to it and restart the installation process.\u00a0 When this happens, you\u2019ll see the Black GRUB menu displayed again as follows:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/16.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"16\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/16.png?resize=733%2C469&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"733\" height=\"469\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>14. Click on <strong>Devices<\/strong>, then CD\/DVD devices, then \u201cRemove Disk from Virtual Drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This will unmount the DVD ISO image from the CD\/DVD.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>15. Click on <strong>Machine<\/strong>, then <strong>RESET<\/strong> to restart from the Virtual Machine\u2019s boot disk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/15.1.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"15.1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/15.1.png?resize=341%2C340&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"341\" height=\"340\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll know that Solaris is installed and booting from the boot disk when it boots to the Blue GRUB menu as shown:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/17.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"17\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/17.png?resize=660%2C557&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"660\" height=\"557\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Option 2- Installing from an appliance<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>After downloading and installing Virtual Box on your PC, download the Solaris 11 appliance image from Oracle (approx 1.5GB download)<\/p>\n<p>A list of prebuilt Solaris 11 virtual machines (appliances) are available here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/server-storage\/solaris11\/downloads\/virtual-machines-1355605.html\">http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/server-storage\/solaris11\/downloads\/virtual-machines-1355605.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Scroll down and select\u00a0 Oracle Solaris 11 VM for Oracle VM VirtualBox<\/p>\n<p>Solaris 10 virtual machines are located at this URL:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/server-storage\/solaris10\/solaris-vm-405695.html\">http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/server-storage\/solaris10\/solaris-vm-405695.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Download and uncompress the files and remember where you put them for the next step.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1. Install and Start VirtualBox on your PC by clicking on the icon:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/1.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/1.png?resize=80%2C96&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"80\" height=\"96\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0Click on <strong>FILE <\/strong>from the top toolbar, then <strong>IMPORT APPLIANCE<\/strong> from the pulldown menu and the following screen will open:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/181.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"18\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/181.png?resize=428%2C453&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"428\" height=\"453\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. Select the location of the unzipped files (Appliance Image) that you downloaded and unzipped earlier:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/19.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"19\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/19.png?resize=570%2C433&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"570\" height=\"433\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4. Click <strong>OPEN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5. Click <strong>NEXT<\/strong>. \u00a0The Appliance Settings window will open. \u00a0 On this screen, you can modify the appliance settings before importing (or leave everything as is). \u00a0You could change the amount of RAM allocated to the virtual machine or you could modify the location of the Virtual Disk Image. \u00a0Click on <strong>IMPORT<\/strong> when finished.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/201.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"20\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/201.png?resize=420%2C448&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"420\" height=\"448\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>6. Click <strong>FINISH<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Virtual Machine will appear in the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager window. \u00a0Highlight the machine and click on Start to start the machine up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Install VirtualBox Additions Package<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I recommend that you install the VirtualBox Additions package in the Solaris virtual machine. \u00a0This makes the mouse and graphics a little easier to work with. It also allows you to cut\/paste from the virtual machine and also resize the VM window.<\/p>\n<p>1. Login to the Solaris VM<\/p>\n<p>2. Press <strong>ENTER <\/strong>as prompted. \u00a0 Reboot the VirtualMachine and the installation is complete.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Create a Snapshot of the VM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Before using the virtual machine to practice, I recommend creating a Snapshot of the Solaris VM. \u00a0Then, if you really mess up the Solaris system, you simply restore the VM snapshot and try again. \u00a0To create the snapshot, follow these staps:<\/p>\n<p>1. Shutdown Solaris by typing<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\"> init 5<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0at the command prompt in a terminal window:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/25.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"25\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/unixed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/25.png?resize=570%2C133&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"570\" height=\"133\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. You&#8217;ll be prompted for a name, enter a name and description.
